2018-2019 SEASON FIXTURES & RESULTS
WEDNESDAY 3 OCTOBER
Kennall Vale 1-1 Stithians
A Harry W strike and a fortunate looping shot from Vale which beat Nic R in the Stithians
goal was enough to see the Academicals begin the season with a point. A fair result.
Constantine 1-1 Stithians
Agony for the Academicals as a wonderful second half header from Jono T was
cancelled out by a Constantine goal with what was the very last kick of the ball.
WEDNESDAY 10 OCTOBER
Mylor Bridge (A) 0-0 Stithians
The Academicals dug deep for a thoroughly deserved point against a strong Mylor team. A real battle ensued in midfield, and a dogged Stithians side prevented any meaningful chance from Mylor, who boasted a 7-0 win the previous week. Each time their opponents came forward, they were met by a determined red wall of defence. Stithians may have created few chances themselves, but the point was more than they deserved for their teamwork and group resilience.
WEDNESDAY 17 OCTOBER
Mylor Bridge (B) 0-1 Stithians
An early goal from Nic R was enough against a backs-against-the-wall Mylor B side to earn the Academicals their first win of the season. The Reds dominated possession, with Mylor's wall of orange difficult to break down, but Nic almost bagged a second for the team when a Mylor defender handled in the box. The resulting penalty, however, was struck against the crossbar.
Penryn 0-3 Stithians
Despite controlling the first half, Stithians failed to carve out any good chances, but turned it completely around in the second when a brilliant passage of play led to Jono T's shot being saved and Sid W scoring a rather fortuitous long range effort that came about as a result. Nic made up for his penalty miss in the previous game with a very well taken second, before Sid rounded off a great performance with a brace - a left-footed power drive into the bottom corner.
WEDNESDAY 31 OCTOBER
Mawnan 2-0 Stithians
Stithians' unbeaten streak came to an end following a disappointing performance against an also hitherto undefeated Mawnan. Mawnan started the brightest and scored from the penalty spot in the first half when Jono T handled in the box. Stithians didn't produce any clear chances of their own, and Mawnan sealed the points in the second half after capitalising on a poor goal kick clearance.
Perran-ar-worthal 0-3 Stithians
Thirty minutes after their Halloween 'trick' performance, came a definite 'treat', as a completely different Academicals side took to the pitch. With slick and quick passing, the Reds hit both the post and the back of the net twice (a brace for Harry W) all before half time. After the break, Willow Z scored his first of the season to round off a great Academicals performance.
WEDNESDAY 7 NOVEMBER
Flushing 0-4 Stithians
The Academicals put on quite a show against Flushing, and were three up before half time thanks to a goal from Jono T and Harry W's brace. In the second half, Mr Smith changed every position around with defenders attacking (and vice versa), and the team soon added a fourth when Willow scored his second of the season.
Mabe 0-0 Stithians
Following an early scare when Mabe hit the crossbar, it was all one-way traffic. Stithians' domination was obvious in that they had 11 corners to Mabe's one, but the Academicals just couldn't find the back of the net. A rather speculative shot from a Mabe defender which hit his own post was the closest Stithians got to finding a winner.
The draw means Stithians have now finished what has been a truly impressive season, losing just once.
THURSDAY 24 JANUARY
Stithians 4-2 Lanner
Stithians staged a remarkable comeback on Thursday afternoon, when the team found themselves 2-0 down with ten minutes to go after having the majority of possession. Not letting their heads drop, the Academicals played as if it was 0-0, and soon pulled one back when Nic R finished a wonderful team move. Minutes later, Nic scored again to pull the Reds level. In the final two minutes, Alex pulled off a great save, and Harry W converted when he found himself one-on-one with the keeper. Harry even scored with his back as a Lanner clearance struck him and ricocheted into the back of the net.
Great team spirit; great victory!
