Reading

The Teaching of Early Reading at Stithians C.P. School

 bookclipart.jpg

We currently use the Rigby Rocket Reading Scheme, levels lilac to lime for home/school reading books which are followed by banded ‘free readers’ books of different genres and authors for those who have completed the scheme.  Staff, volunteers, children and parents use the reading records books, also provided, to record certain information.

The reading record books can and do show which book the child is reading, dates of reading, sight vocabulary associated with each book, challenges the book brought up and aspects of the books the child liked.

Due to NEW Government curriculum guidelines for ’learning to read’ we have just bought new ‘Guided Reading’ resources for use in teaching children to read in school up to orange reading band.  These will be fully decodeable texts and levelled to be in line with ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme of study.

We will continue to use the Rigby Rocket Scheme as a ‘home book’ with the addition of ‘bookmarks’. The bookmarks will enable parents to be aware of their child’s learning as they will highlight aspects of reading taking place in school which can be reinforced at home.  The bookmarks will identify phonemes of the week, tricky words, topic words, spellings or phrases depending on the weekly coverage and the ability of the child.

Early Years and Key Stage 1 staff will be holding a ‘Reading Open Evening’ early in the Summer Term and all parents are invited to join us to discuss aspects of phonics and reading to enable us to reinforce our existing home/school partnership.
