The Teaching of Early Reading at Stithians C.P. School

We currently use the Rigby Rocket Reading Scheme, levels lilac to lime for home/school reading books.  These  are followed by banded ‘free reader’ books of different genres and authors for those who have completed the scheme.  All 'free reader' book levels have just been updated (12th March 2020) with over 200 books added to ensure the children have lots of exciting books to choose from.  These include new authors, fact books, additions to collections and, after consultation with parents and children, books of their choosing.

We will continue to use the Rigby Rocket Scheme as a ‘home book’ with the addition of flashcards, wordsheets and phoneme packs along with a variety of home activities to support this learning.

Staff, volunteers, children and parents use the reading records books, also provided, to record certain information.  The reading record books can and do show which book the child is reading, dates of reading, sight vocabulary associated with each book, challenges the book brought up and aspects of the books the child liked.

Due to Government curriculum guidelines for ’learning to read’ we also have ‘Guided Reading’ resources for use in teaching children to read in school, these extend up to orange reading band.  These are Phonics Bug Books and are fully decodeable texts, levelled to be in line with ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme of study.

Key Stage 2 classes also have a variety of Guided Reading books which have just been updated (12th March 2020).  These exciting books cater for all level of readers and ensure that most preferences are catered for.

Early Years and Key Stage 1 staff will be holding a ‘Reading Open Evening’ early in the Summer Term and all parents are invited to join us to discuss aspects of phonics and reading to enable us to reinforce our existing home/school partnership.  Watch ot for the newsletter!
